Introduction to Belegvildian Religion

Dzāshāgfeurāzhōr(Faith of Seven Gods) — the only religion of Belegvild. It includes a pantheon of seven gods with Shāg, the goddess of earth, in charge.

Gods

Shāg — goddess of earth, the creator of Belegvild. She rules over all things that have constant forms.

Oukh — goddess of fire, passion, art, and war. Was first to help Shāg in creation.

Tōāzh — god of sky, clouds, weather, and morals. Was second to help Shāg in creation.

Ē — Goddess of nature, plants, animals, and spirits. Came third with her son, Lugezh, to help Shāg with creation.

Afit — goddess of gemstones, secrets, fog, and darkness. Came fourth to help Shāg with creation.

Lūgezh — god of knowledge, wits, and revelations.

Virzh — god of water, ocean, and death. Was made into god by Shāg herself.

Shāgāzhtezh

Shāgāzhtezh(shāgāzh in singular) — servants of Shāg, created before Belegvild. All they have different duties and titles, but the most important are Posarazh, Dezureizh, Feroygas, and Guzhesizh, first shāgāzhtezh created.

Posarazh became the king of the new world. Dezureizh and Feroygas became dukes, while Guzhesizh chose to help as simple mortal. After their death, they returned to Shāg as high-ranking warriors.

All other shāgāzhtezh were created as warriors, messengers, keepers of secrets, etc.

Creation

Before the time in Belegvild had begun, Shāg was a goddess of magical spring Tarey that could create almost anything. One day, however, the spring has created Shākzhezir, an evil demon with the face of Shāg. This demon was but a power of absolute destruction, and so the goddess decided to create an entire world to make demon surrender.

With the help of many divine beings, she created a giant continent in the endless ocean of what once was a magical spring. Afit, the goddess of gemstones and secrets, created the unbreakable spherical barrier around the continent with one giant source of light that was called Vild(Eye).

Time had passed, and Belegvild was finally created and ready to live.

Kanutezh lu Shāg

Kanutezh lu Shāg(The Books of Shāg) — holy text of religion. Was created by the goddess herself as a narration of all main events of the next(and only) thousand of years. Includes Book of Creation, Book of Kings, Ten Books of Ages, and Book of The End.

It was dinnertime in the House of Lamentation. Conversation petered out as everyone focused on the hot food in front of them, leaving a quiet lull interrupted only by clinking silverware.

“I’ve always wanted a traditional church wedding,” you said, entirely unprompted.

The clinking came to a stop as the seven brothers processed what you had just said. They turned their eyes towards you.

Beelzebub was the first to break the silence despite his mouth full of food. “Huh?”

“I just always thought it would be nice. A quaint wedding in a nice little church. Maybe a chapel.”

Leviathan briefly choked on what he was chewing.

“Oh I totally get it!” Asmodeus empathized. “Rows of pews with white flowers, those high arched ceilings, the evening light of the human world sun shining on us through a beautiful stained glass window as we kiss? Oh!” He clutched his shoulders, “it gives me chills just imagining it!”

“Asmo, we can’t enter churches,” Satan stated matter-of-factly. The knife handle gripped in his fist started to bend.

“Hah!? What? Lucifer, is that true?” Mammon slammed his fork down and just about jumped out of his chair as he shouted at the oldest.

“Sit down, Mammon.” Lucifer rubbed his temple and tried to perform damage control before the inevitable headache set in. “What brought this on suddenly?” he asked you.

Keeping a straight face was immensely difficult but you pulled it off. “I was just thinking about weddings and stuff, y’know. It’d be nice. Ever since I was little I thought a church wed-”

Belphegor interjected with “You’re not even that religious.”

A flood of complaints washed over the table as everyone started loudly protesting.

“You… You’re not allowed to get married anywhere without me!” Leviathan shouted.

“Does it have to be a church? What about a restaurant instead?” Beel suggested, looking worried. “I know a lot of pretty ones.”

“We could build a mock church in a studio and get married there,” Asmo fantasized. “The stained glass could be you and me as cherubs, we can ask Luke to be the flower boy. He’d be so cute in a little tux!”

“You wouldn’t even need a ceremony with me,” Belphegor said. “If you really want one, we can have it outdoors under the stars.”

Satan’s knife was bent at a 90-degree angle. “What a stupid thing to say. Libraries are just as quiet and nice as churches. Probably. They sure suit you better than a church.” 

“The restaurants also have in-house catering,” Beel continued.

“That ain’t gonna happen!” Mammon bounced his knee, shaking the entire table as he lamented, “I ain’t lettin’ my human get married in some church! We can go anywhere you want! Anywhere else!”

”There’s a church in my game!” Leviathan gasped. He thought an in-game wedding would be just as good as a real one. “I can show you! We can go now! Lets make you a character!”

Lucifer cleared his throat once. Then twice. The third time was a warning that got lost amid all of the whining. “Enough,” he finally growled. The room went silent for him. “You’re not getting married in a church. End of discussion.”

“Oh.” Weird of him to decide that on his own, but you were at your limit. A wide grin had already spread across your face. “Yeah, ok. By the way this roast you made is delicious.”

Ancient Legends of Duchy Gehastis

Goddess Shāg has blessed this region with many tales about magical creatures and spirits. This book is a short overview of such spirits and creatures.

(D)Zheroy, also known as Wooden King(Posāzh fuor) and King of Oaks(Posāzh gesior) — the most powerful spirit of the forest, ruler and keeper. Usually, he is known for tricking young folks, tempting them with many riches and pleasures. Sometimes, he may reveal secrets about forest and nature if he happens to like a human. Many people think of him as a second form to Lūgezh, the God of Knowledge.

Gushifel(r) — a forest spirit that can take a form of human and many birds and flying insects(usually owls and dark butterflies). When in human form, Gushifel usually present themselves as nobleman and may give extravagant presents. Usually presents turn out to be malevolent or worthless, but there are exceptions. In many tales, Gushifel is considered a relative to Zheroy(son in Eastern Gehastis and younger brother in West).

Aviler — spirit that lures people in the deepest parts of forest with enchanting songs.

Seolif – spirit in the form of short man with beard and giant hat. He usually asks whoever he meets what is under his hat. Those who guessed it correct are given gold and fish. Those who guessed it wrong lose all the clothes they have on. According to the tales, the right answer to this question is Seolif himself.

Fuogeral — large magical boar with golden hooves. According to legends, the beast moves faster than any other forest animal is able to. Only the Wooden King is able to ride on Fuogeral, and it happens quite often during gatherings of the forest spirits and meetings with humans. The meat of Fuogeral, according to some tales, can grant eternal youth.

Dzhākhā — magical bird that has the ability to speak. Servant and messenger of the Wooden King. If someone hunts down this bird, Zheroy will grant one wish of the hunter. Tales warn, however, that wish must be very exact. Otherwise, King will find a way to misinterpret the wish and grant it in a wrong, sometimes literal way.

A priest preparing in the church of Santa Eulàlia de Casa Serra in the village of Lladorre (High Pyrenees, Catalonia).

This church was built in the 8th century and reformed in the 11th century, when it was turned into the little Romanesque building we can see today. The brightly-coloured retable at the end of the chapel's only absis, seen in the photo above, was added in the 17th century.
